How to Get Started With Personal Growth

Jun 12, 2019

If you’ve been hearing people talk about personal growth, but you’re unsure of how to get started, this post is for you.

How to get started with personal growth.

But before we get to that, let’s say you stay in your current situation. The one where…

  • Your marriage feels hopeless.
  • You can’t lose the last ten pounds.
  • You don’t achieve your exercise goals.
  • You haven’t started eating healthy.
  • Your home is still unorganized.

What if you stayed there? How does it feel to think about staying the same?

Not good? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

It’s time to make changes. Let’s talk about how we do that.

How to get started with personal growth.

Personal growth is simply you growing into the best version of yourself. Whatever that means for you. It does NOT have to mean six-pack abs, running 7 days a week, waking up at 5am, eating only kale and spinach, reading for an hour every day, and being completely debt free before you buy a house or start a business. Just because there are some people that have those goals, does not mean that you have to have those goals. Your life is yours. Your goals are yours. Stay in your lane and focus on YOUR goals. That’s the first step. Now, let’s break down the rest.

Here are a few questions to get you started.

  • If you felt your very best, how would it feel?
  • If you could pick one area to improve, what would it be?
  • If you could change one relationship, which one would you choose?
  • If you could eliminate one bad habit, which would it be?
  • I wish I didn’t feel so ______ and could feel more ______.

Most of us could answer those questions and fill in the blanks immediately. We know the one area we want to work on and the one relationship we wish were better. We know the goals we’ve mentioned but not followed through on.

It doesn’t mean you have goals to complete a triathlon. You might just want to lose weight or clean out the clutter in your home. Those are goals. They count. So how do you make them happen?

Step 1: You set one goal at a time.

Let’s say you want to lose weight. Where do you need to start? We all know the answer – food + exercise. Eat better and exercise more. But that’s too broad. We need to make it simpler.

Step 2: You break your goal down into tiny action steps.

  1. Decide what foods you need to give up. Sugar? Dairy? Fast food? Sodas? Alcohol? What’s a problem for you? Do you need to go extreme (do a Whole30 to reset) or remove one item?
  2. Clean out your pantry. Remove those items.
  3. Research meals.
  4. Make a list of meals.
  5. Grocery shopping.
  6. Cook those meals.
  7. Rinse and repeat steps 3-6.

Step 3: Set a date to begin your journey.

Give yourself a timeline and STICK TO IT! Giving up sugar for 30 days? Great!

Step 4: Think of everything that will get in the way and plan for it.

Giving up sugar but going to a birthday party this month? Plan ahead. Be prepared to say “no, thanks!” when asked if you want cake. Take flavored sparkling water or fruit that you love instead. Think in advance because obstacles will come up and it’s up to you to stay on track.

Step 5: Goal one has become a habit.

You’ll either reach the goal and can check it off or you’ll create a habit. Once you’ve given something enough time and stayed the course, it does get easier. It becomes part of your routine or second nature. You no longer have to read labels at the grocery store to make sure an item doesn’t contain sugar. You know now and you buy accordingly. You also plan your meals accordingly and say “no” when you know you can’t have something. AND you stop craving it. You find that you don’t desire sugar as often anymore because you’ve found that you feel better without it.

If you read this and you still need help, let’s work together. Your goals CAN happen. It IS possible. And I can help you get there. Book your clarity call and let’s not let another year go by without personal growth.
