The phrase is usually “when life hands you lemons”, but I’m changing it up and saying, “when life hands you negativity” because life inevitably hands you negativity, doesn’t it?
When Life is Hard
As Brooke Castillo always says, life is 50/50. It is 50% positive and 50% negative. That is normal. You will experience both negative emotions and positive emotions. This is a good thing.
Now that you have that in mind, let’s discuss a scenario where this applies. Let’s say you are rocking and rolling on the healthy lifestyle train. You are eating all of the healthy foods, drinking lots of water, and putting your phone away and picking up a book before bed. You’ve got this. And then life happens. The day rolls around that work was crazy, you’re tired, and you’d rather pick up fast food. Or you end up scrolling social media way too late and you go to bed much later than you’d like.
You start thinking negative thoughts about what you’ve done, you begin feeling frustrated, and now you’re just plain over it. How do you get back on track? How do you get back to that positive place you were in that was going so well?
How to get back on track:
Feel the negative emotion.
- Where does it show up in your body?
- Sit with it for a moment. Let it be there.
Ask yourself, “if I was the person that _____ (got up early, drank more water, exercised regularly), would I feel negative emotion and move through it anyway?”
- The answer is yes. Everyone feels negative emotions. The most successful people that you admire also feel negative emotions. The difference is that they don’t get stuck in those emotions. They move forward even when they feel negative. They keep taking action even when they aren’t all positive and happy about it.
It is truly that simple. And it’s okay. This is your reminder that negative emotion is normal. Don’t believe the lie that you have to feel positive all of the time to keep doing amazing things in the world. You can keep moving forward when things are negative. If you wait for things to be perfect and positive all of the time, you’ll stay right where you are. Don’t you want to be able to keep going even in the tough times? Trust me, you do.
